UCLA Student Health Education and Promotion (SHEP)

Life Skills (CHS 179) is a 4-unit course developed by SHEP and hosted by the Community Health Services (CHS) department of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Its purpose is to assist students in navigating the developmental and academic challenges of the college years and beyond.

The course addresses three significant areas of growth: understanding and management of stressful emotions, development of the multiple aspects of one’s identity, and understanding communication in conjunction with utilizing communication techniques to support healthy relationships.

SHEP recognized a need to provide health promotion interventions to students at every developmental position, so the course was designed to foster a supportive atmosphere that gives students an opportunity to practice their skills in real time. Over the years, the students' feedback has emphasized that the course is a life-long investment in oneself and one's relationships.
